Turkish Aerospace Industries Presents DIAMETER Research at THERMEC’2025
Tabs
At THERMEC’2025, DIAMETER proudly shines on the international stage, presenting cutting-edge research that is shaping the future of advanced materials.
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), partner of the DIAMETER project, has presented groundbreaking research at THERMEC’2025 – the International Conference on Processing & Manufacturing of Advanced Materials, held from 30 June to 4 July 2025in Tours, France.
The presentation, entitled “Evaluation of Porosity and Hardness in Aerospace-Grade Aluminium Alloys Processed by Friction Surfacing”, showcased innovative approaches to improving the performance of high-strength aluminium alloys widely used in aerospace applications. Researchers Erol Halil Ibrahim, Gulletutan Umut Can, Gunaydin Ahmet Can, and Altinok Sertac from TAI explored how friction-based additive manufacturing (FBAM) can overcome the limitations of traditional methods, ensuring both structural integrity and material efficiency.
Why It Matters for Aerospace
Lightweight yet mechanically robust materials are essential in aerospace manufacturing, where improving the buy-to-fly ratio and reducing waste are strategic priorities. Conventional subtractive methods can waste up to 70% of material, while additive approaches such as Direct Energy Deposition (DED) or friction surfacing reduce waste to less than 10%. Unlike conventional fusion-based additive manufacturing, solid-state techniques such as friction surfacing avoid phase transformations that can compromise material performance — a critical factor for aerospace safety and reliability.
Contribution to DIAMETER’s Objectives
The research presented by TAI aligns directly with DIAMETER’s ambition to demonstrate sustainable, circular-by-design hybrid manufacturing systems based on advanced additive technologies. By investigating solid-state approaches for aluminium alloys, TAI contributes to expanding the portfolio of additive manufacturing techniques validated within DIAMETER, paving the way for more circular and resource-efficient aerospace production.
