Powering Innovation for Sustainable Manufacturing in Diameter

Is additive manufacturing actually sustainable? Evren Yasa, Head of Additive Manufacturing at the University of Sheffield AMRC, argues the answer depends entirely on the process, the application and the material — and that the data to prove it does not yet exist.

Meet AMRC, established in 2001 as a collaboration between Boeing and the University of Sheffield. AMRC is a leading hub for industrial innovation, working across additive manufacturing, machining, casting, composites and materials science with companies from large enterprises to startups. In this interview, Evren Yasa explains how DIAMETER started in a Sheffield coffee shop, why AMRC leads Work Package 1, and what it means to be process and model owner of additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) — an emerging technology with fewer than 100 published papers behind it.

AMRC's Strategic Contribution to DIAMETER

DIAMETER began almost by chance: two years ago, Evren and coordinator Taner Tunç met in a Sheffield coffee shop to discuss project ideas around AFSD — a unique capability AMRC holds in Europe and the UK. That conversation grew into the consortium, with a shared focus on making additive manufacturing's sustainability claims more reliable and standardised, rather than simply assumed.

Within the project, AMRC's role covers two areas:

  • Leading Work Package 1: Setting the scene for the whole project and collecting the crucial data needed by other work packages — process modelling, Life Cycle Assessment, and demonstrator work
  • Process and Model Owner of AFSD: Performing all process modelling and process development activities, as well as data collection, on this emerging AM technology

Real-World Impact

For Evren, working on AFSD is exciting precisely because so little research exists on it yet — leaving plenty of room to mature the process while building in sustainability from the start. He expects the project's reliable, comparative sustainability data across technologies like DED, AFSD, LPBF and MMD to drive strong industrial uptake, with AMRC's own impact carried forward through publications and its network of more than 100 industrial partners.
