Meet Our Partner: RMIT EU

Driving Sustainability in DIAMETER

Today, the decision to manufacture a part one way rather than another is mainly technically driven. DIAMETER is building the tools to change that.

Meet RMIT Europe, which brings to the DIAMETER consortium an expertise in the industrial application of additive manufacturing. In this interview, Quentin Schmitt introduces RMIT Europe's role in the project: developing simulation tools able to predict both the performance of a product and the environmental impact of the manufacturing process, before the object is manufactured.

RMIT Europe's Strategic Contribution to DIAMETER

RMIT Europe joined DIAMETER because the project offers a unique way to bring together, on one hand, the technical application of additive manufacturing and, on the other, the sustainability implications of using these new processes.

Within the project, RMIT Europe's specific role is to:

  • Develop Simulation Tools: Building tools able to predict a product's performance and the environmental impact of its manufacturing process, prior to manufacturing the object

The purpose is to make sustainability a usable decision criterion rather than a retrospective assessment, giving engineers and manufacturers the means to choose not only on technical constraints, but also on sustainability constraints, so that a route which is slightly more expensive can still be the right one when it is better for the environment.

Real-World Impact

What excites Quentin most is the unique set of expertise the consortium brings together, academic research, sustainability assessment, and OEMs contributing the final application of these tools.

Looking ahead, he sees DIAMETER's tools helping educate a new generation of engineers to think differently, making technical choices that account for sustainability alongside technical and economic constraints.
