Meet Our Partner: Uni Systems
Powering Innovation for Sustainable Manufacturing in Diameter
A project like DIAMETER produces tools in a dozen places at once. Someone has to make them work together in one place — that is Uni Systems' role.
In this interview, Panayiotis Alefragis, electrical and computer engineer specialising in large-scale optimisation algorithms, explains why Uni Systems took on sustainability as a company decision, what the role of IT integrator involves, and how his group is developing an optimisation scheduler for the manufacturability of the process designs proposed within the project.
Uni Systems is a large European IT integrator with thousands of employees, building solutions from components and systems for clients across sectors. In DIAMETER it leads the development of the project's digital platform, currently under development.
Uni Systems' Strategic Contribution to DIAMETER
Uni Systems mainly works on integrating components and systems to create viable, and more importantly, useful solutions for its clients. The company decided as an organisation to work on sustainability — part of the philosophy it wants to pass on to the next generation.
Within DIAMETER, Uni Systems' contribution spans two areas:
- IT Integration: Acting as the project's IT integrator, creating the DIAMETER platform — the software platform where all components developed within the project will be integrated and presented to end users
- Manufacturability Optimisation: Developing an optimisation scheduler for the manufacturability of the process designs proposed within the project
By the end of DIAMETER, Uni Systems aims to deliver two things: information for industrial users on how to use the platform and what the good practices are, and assistance tools that let them make decisions that are not always straightforward for a non-specialist — offering alternatives that are not easily found in most cases, with real effects across LCA and the full life cycle of a component.
Real-World Impact
Panayiotis is excited about the possibility and the impact the project may create in producing more sustainable metallic components in industry — components that are, in his words, key factors in everyday life, present everywhere even when not always visible.
As a niche, specialised software developed for people creating industrial components, DIAMETER's platform sits within a broader organisation that creates solutions affecting thousands of people. Uni Systems will continue to support the platform's development, hopes for greater collaboration with other partners to create a viable, lasting solution, and will use its network to promote the results going forward.
