Powering Innovation for Sustainable Manufacturing in Diameter
Alex Giorgini, R&D Manager at Valland, presents the company's role in DIAMETER, the Horizon Europe project developing a circular-by-design manufacturing system based on additive manufacturing.
Meet Valland, an Italian company based in northern Italy, founded in 2006 by engineer Giacomo Andrea Mondora, a long-standing figure in the oil and gas and energy industry with a specific focus on valve manufacturing. Valland designs, produces, assembles and tests industrial valves for energy applications, serving the North Sea area, particularly Norway, and a global customer base. Over the past five years, the company has established a dedicated additive manufacturing division covering the full process chain: design optimisation, job preparation, production with metal materials, polymers and resins, and post-processing including heat treatment and machining.
Valland's Strategic Contribution to DIAMETER
Valland joined DIAMETER for what Alex describes as a unique mix of ingredients: digitalisation, the ability to select the best available technology for an application, streamlined process traceability, and a direct answer to environmental footprint concerns.
Within the project, Valland plays a double role, contributing mainly to WP1 and WP5:
- Data Generation: Executing test and validation plans that feed data on material properties and process consumption, energy, gas, and material, into the database underlying the DIAgonal platform
- Industrial Demonstration: Acting as use case owner of Pilot 2, working on a critical component of an industrial valve, and as process owner of Pilot 5 together with Fraunhofer for LPBF technology, working on a blade geometry for energy industry applications
Real-World Impact
Alex sees the DIAgonal platform becoming a real game changer for the industry, both as a screening tool for companies like Valland that already have AM know-how, and as a way to reveal AM's hidden potential to companies in sectors like oil and gas and energy, where the benefits aren't always obvious at first sight.
Looking ahead, Valland hopes to embed DIAgonal into its standard AM workflows, unlocking new markets and applications beyond its current reference sector, and sees a future commercial perspective for the platform as it gains adoption and reliability among partners.
